Iowa farmer begins planting in less-than-ideal weather
A farmer in west-central Iowa began planting this week.
Brent Johnson of Manson says field conditions are pretty good despite less-than-ideal weather.
“But just in the last couple days we’ve really started making some headway as far as getting some fields planted and worked up, and things are working really well. Just looking for some rain in our part of the state.”
Speaking to Brownfield this Thursday morning, he says soil temps are bouncing above and below 50 degrees.
“A couple cold days (earlier this week) really brought the soil temperatures down into the lower 40’s, but yesterday we had a nice day and I haven’t look at (soil temps) today yet but I would guess we’re right about 50 degrees right now.”
Johnson, the current Iowa Farm Bureau president, says he started with soybeans but is looking to plant some corn this week as well.
