Farmer says fieldwork is underway, but planting is not
Southern Ohio farmer Greg Corcoran says spring fieldwork is underway despite cool conditions.
“It’s been wet on and off, but mostly cold. We haven’t had that temperature rise where we would like to see,” he says. “We’ve been able to apply 90 percent of our anhydrous. Dryer stretches, even though they were cold, allowed us to put a lot of our inputs in that we typically do ahead of planting.”
Corcoran tells Brownfield he’s hopeful they’ll be able to plant this week.
“We see an opportunity to get out and get some acres planted. Temperatures are there for us to start planting. It’s on the border for corn but soybeans should be in good shape so we’re going to start getting some planting done.”
But, he says more rain is expected this weekend.
“We’re at that time where we feel like we need to get started and we need to start getting things in the ground and get going planting,” he says. “But, it’s always cautionary if we get cold and wet again it could be troublesome for the seed in the ground or anything that comes up.”
Corcoran grows corn, soybeans, and popcorn in Ross, Pike, and Scioto counties.
