Cool, wet conditions keep planting at bay in southeast Minnesota

Adverse conditions are limiting fieldwork in southeast Minnesota.

Red Wing area farmer Les Anderson says soils remain wet and cool.

“Not very nice conditions, and of course the soil temperature is a big one as far as corn planting. I haven’t done any measurements, but with air temperatures this cold and freezes overnight basically, it’s not good conditions for planting corn.”

He tells Brownfield a year ago corn planting was done by May 1st and had a good start on soybeans.

“I just remember last year was so pleasant, field conditions were great, temperatures great (and) there was no rain in the forecast so there was no hurry.”

Anderson is hoping to start applying fertilizer this week but says the forecast entering May still does not look conducive to planting corn.
