Senate Ag Committee holds hearing on cattle market bill

The Senate Agriculture Committee is holding a hearing on the Cattle Price Discovery and Transparency Act today.

Iowa Republican Chuck Grassley is a co-author and says half the committee co-sponsors the bill, including some Democrats.

“Lawmakers have begun to realize that to have a sustainable and affordable meat supply in our country, we need to restore transparency (and) make the marketplace work.”

The legislation continues to face opposition, including Republican colleague and Senate Ag Committee Ranking Member John Boozman of Arkansas, but Grassley tells Brownfield he’s not changing his approach.

“The message has not changed. In fact, I think the rationale for the legislation is becoming more obvious, and that’s why we’ve reached a point where we are now of having a hearing and having about an equal number Democrats and Republicans.”

Grassley says he believes the Cattle Price Discovery and Transparency Act is “headed in the right direction.”

Grassley made these comments during his weekly call with ag reporters Tuesday morning before the hearing.
