Feeding America leans on Congress for financial help to meet demand for food assistance

Feeding America says rising prices is impacting the supplies at food banks.

Chief Government Relations Officer Vince Hall says they’ve asked Congress for financial support to meet the rising demand for food assistance. “Rising food costs can stem from rising prices for agriculture inputs like fuel, fertilizer and seed and the cost of transportation affects farmers and ranchers just as much as local food banks.”

He says food banks are struggling to meet the demand. “We’re asking Congress to ensure that food banks have critical food resources and program flexibilities necessary to address the need for food assistance by providing an additional $900 million for the Emergency Food Assistance Program at USDA.”

And, Hall says, funding could be made available through the Commodity Credit Corporation and other nutritional programs at USDA.

He would like to see more food industry partnerships with local food banks.
