Nebraska farmer starts plants soybeans despite weather conditions

A South-Central Nebraska farmer says the drought has disrupted the beginning of planting season.

Jay Reiners says he started planting soybeans last Saturday near Juniata. “Soil conditions are really dry.  I ran pivots to incorporate my bean preemergence a couple of weeks ago, so I do have moisture. But, my dryland corners I don’t know what they’re going to survive on without some help from the good Lord here shortly.”

He tells Brownfield cold temperatures and high winds have put him behind schedule. “The last two years I’ve had soybeans done by now,” he says. “I guess I just I was kind of holding off to see if it was going to rain or if was going to warm up at all, but it certainly has not done either of those. Most guys around here, their planters will be rolling hot and heavy over the next couple of days.”

Reiners is the chairman of the Nebraska Corn Board and grows corn, seed corn and soybeans.
