NU President says new health care facility is vital to rural Nebraska

Nebraska Governor Pete Ricketts has signed a bill allocating $60 million for a rural healthcare complex that would benefit farmers and ranchers.

University of Nebraska System President Ted Carter tells Brownfield the facility, located on the Kearney campus, will help bridge the rural healthcare gap. “What it will do is produce doctors, nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists and even mental health specialists for our rural counties of which, today, there 14 counties don’t have a primary care physician in Nebraska. Fourteen out of 93.”

He says the project will grow the state’s workforce and improve viability in rural communities. “We care about the health and vibrancy of all Nebraska especially when you get west of York. That matters and we’re really excited about the possibility here.”

LB 1014 appropriates Nebraska’s share of federal American Rescue Plan dollars to help build the University of Nebraska at Kearney-University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNK-UNMC) Rural Health Complex.
