Eight tornadoes tear across Iowa Tuesday night, damaging more than a dozen farms

More than a dozen Iowa farms sustained damage as severe weather moved across the state Tuesday night.

Iowa State Climatologist Justin Glisan tells Brownfield there were four EF1 tornadoes, two EF2’s, and two EF0’s.

“So on the less extreme scale, but those EF2’s are significant (because) you can have 111 to 135 mile-per hour winds. So we had one EF2 go through Gilmore City, and we had 13 farms that were impacted.”

He says some outbuildings and other structures were damaged or destroyed and there was one injury associated with that tornado.

“Most of these tornadoes went through rural parts of the state, so we lucked out there.”

Glisan says Tuesday’s storms also brought variable precipitation to Iowa, along with hail and high winds.
