South Dakota corn grower praises reinstatement of E15 summertime waiver

A South Dakota corn grower who sends much of his crop to nearby ethanol plants is praising President Biden’s announcement allowing summertime E15 use.

Scott Stahl tells Brownfield says the EPA’s restoration of an emergency waiver allowing E15 this summer is great news. “We know that biofuels and ethanol, in particular, have proven themselves time and time again to be good for the consumer, good for the environment, and very good for corn producers across the Midwest, so we’re very excited about this march forward and hopefully, ethanol will continue to gain momentum through this E15 announcement.”

Stahl says ethanol creates more than a local demand for corn. “Enhancing basis levels, improving demand on the balance sheet nationwide, but also you know the distiller’s grains and the function that has in feeding the nation’s livestock. You know, there’s just so much synergy created through ethanol.”

Stahl says he’s hopeful this temporary E15 decision can build momentum for positives moving forward, like a permanent rule allowing higher ethanol blends.

Stahl says the ethanol industry has been transformational for his farm and family, allowing him to come back to the farm 15 years ago. Stahl sends corn to both the POET plant in Chancellor, South Dakota and to NuGen Energy in Marion, South Dakota.
