Full funding expected for UNL-based USDA research center

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Chancellor Ronnie Green says he’s optimistic UNL will receive full funding for an on-campus USDA research facility.

He tells Brownfield UNL has secured $31 million of the $120 million for the center that will focus on precision ag and innovation. “We know that we have funding yet to come and yet to be appropriated. We have full support of the USDA and have support in Congress we believe to see the rest of this come in.”

UNL secured $11.2 million in federal funding in December 2020 for the planning and design of a USDA Agricultural Research Service facility located at UNL’s Innovation Campus.

Green says planning is underway with USDA “which will involve greenhouse facilities as we speak.  They’re hoping, I think, in the coming year to be underway with that part of the facility as a phase one with additional funds anticipated in the next federal budget and the year after that.”

The facility is scheduled to open in 2024.
