Iowa agronomist says field conditions are better than this time last year

The start of planting season is rapidly approaching, and an Iowa-based agronomist says field conditions in his coverage area look good.

Channel’s Jeremy Miner says fields are actually a little ahead of where there were last year at this time.  “We may be a little bit behind as far as guys being able to get into the field,” he says.  “But we’re definitely accepting the moisture in what’s coming now.”

He tells Brownfield in areas where moisture is short, farmers should consider a seed treatment.  “Just in case we run into those cases where it sits in the ground and we don’t warm up nearly as fast as we could,” he says.  “We’re on the watch out for that.”

Miner says there has been some talk about shifting acreage this spring, but, says that conversation changes almost daily.  “What I’m picking up from a lot of farmers right now is that the concern is there,” he says.  “But when it comes down to it and they had to pull the trigger and make the decision today, a lot of guys are sticking with their original plan.”

However, if input availability becomes more of an issue this spring, he says he wouldn’t be surprised to see more farmers shift at least some acres from corn to soybeans.
