A big jump in beef production
The USDA says February 2022 red meat production was up slightly from February of last year.
The total of 4.43 billion pounds was a 1% increase from 2021.
Beef production for the month was at 2.25 billion pounds, up 7% from the previous year, with a 6% rise in the slaughter and a 5 pound gain for the average live weight.
Pork production was 2.17 billion pounds, 4% lower, with a 5% decrease in slaughter and a two-pound increase in the average live weight.
For the year, 2022 commercial red meat production is at 8.99 billion pounds, down 2% from 2021.
The USDA says February’s dairy cow slaughter was 266,500 head, 5,700 from more than January, and 1,300 more than February 2021.
