Farm credit system ready to help poultry sector through avian flu outbreak

The farm credit system is poised to help poultry producers impacted by highly pathogenic avian influenza.

Tom Dobbe with Farm Credit Services of America says as a lender, they are always prepared for disasters.

“They happen because of weather, they happen because of disease, they happen for a lot of reasons. We have disaster programs that are always in place that are ready to be deployed to our customers where we can defer principal payments, we can re-amortize debts, we can structure loans differently.”

He tells Brownfield Farm Credit Services of America has a huge footprint in the poultry sector and some customers have been affected by avian flu.

“We generally kind of take that in stride. We’re kind of more (like) it’s going to happen, we expect it, and we’re ready for it when it does. You’ve got to be there to support your customer. But that’s also why we focus so much on always consider risk management. Are you ready for it?”

He says everything from insurance packages to biosecurity go into a risk management model.

Brownfield interviewed Dobbe Wednesday at the Midwest Poultry Federation Convention.
