Great Lakes YEN focuses on collaborative analysis for better wheat yields

One hundred wheat farmers across the Great Lakes and Ontario plan to collect and share data throughout 2022 to enhance yields.

Dennis Pennington with Michigan State University Extension tells Brownfield after success seen in last year’s pilot for the Great Lakes Yield Enhancement Network, participants this year span across Michigan, Ontario, Ohio, Indiana, New York, and Wisconsin.

“We are collecting more data on the wheat crop than we’ve probably ever collected on any single crop ever—I have 250 data points that we’re collecting,” he says.

Pennington says the collaborative network of the program gives farmers the opportunity to share management strategies based on results.

Growers in Ontario will be collecting data on soil health benefits in 2022 for the first time and an app has been developed for data submissions along with management recommendations based on growing conditions.
