Farmer excited for PACE crop insurance program

An Illinois farmer is excited for the inaugural year of the Post Application Coverage Endorsement or PACE program available to corn growers in select Midwest counties through their crop insurance.

Tim Thompson tells Brownfield it will allow growers to make better decisions on applying nitrogen because it covers the risk of not getting in-season nitrogen applied.

“Do part of theirs in the fall and in-season. In doing so, that could give us some big benefits on crop insurance with a reduced payment going forward into the 2022 season.”

Farmers in designated counties of Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin are eligible this year, but Thompson is hopeful the program will expand to even more growers next year.

“We are hearing a lot of positive things from other states who are going to be watching this year and looking to implement that for the 2023 and beyond seasons.”

The PACE endorsement can be purchased with Yield Protection, Revenue Protection or Harvest Price Exclusion insurance policies. The first sales closing date to purchase crop insurance is March 15th.
