American Dairy Association Indiana celebrates National School Breakfast Week

The American Dairy Association Indiana kicked off National School Breakfast Week at Franklin Community Middle School.

Brooke Williams, director of communications, says the school was recently awarded a new school breakfast cart from the organization and the Indianapolis Colts.

“It’s always a fun time to talk about the importance of breakfast during this week-long celebration,” she says. “They had a little extra reason to do so this week and that was the debut of the breakfast cart for all of the students.”

She says the school already offered breakfast to students, but the cart allows more flexibility.

“The breakfast cart gives them the additional option to set up anywhere in the school,” she says. “On Monday, as students were entering into the school, students had the option of grabbing a bowl of cereal, a carton of cold milk, bananas, and a cup of fruit. The students can eat that breakfast on the way to their classroom and some of the teachers allow students to eat the breakfast in the classroom. It’s one more way that the students can grab a free breakfast. There’s no longer this perception that they have to wait in line for their food in a cafeteria, they can just grab it and go which is why so many more schools across the state and country are implementing these breakfast carts.”

The American Dairy Association Indiana recently partnered with the Indianapolis Colts to host a Fuel Up to Play 60 event. The event highlighted the importance of a daily, healthy breakfast combined with physical activity.

Williams says it’s important for Indiana dairy families to share the health and nutrition benefits of their dairy products.

“What better way to do that than partnering with the Indianapolis Colts and making it a fun way for kids to learn about great nutrition and those great habits to start at a young age,” she says.
