January dairy exports up on price, down slightly in volume

The U.S. Dairy Export Council says higher prices and added cheese demand carried exports during January.

Total export values for the month were up 16 percent from 2021 to $586 million while the volume declined by three percent.

The council says tight global dairy supplies are increasing values but demand for nonfat dry milk/skim milk powder and whey was down on the year.

Export volumes of nonfat dry milk/skim milk powder declined six percent from 2021 and whey was down 16 percent which economists say tightened because of declining demand from China.

Cheese exports were up 17 percent on the year with major growth in Mexico and Australia.
