Corn for ethanol demand up in 2021

The USDA says 5.152 billion bushels of U.S. corn were consumed for ethanol production in 2021. That’s an increase of 8% from 2020, when production was constrained by the pandemic, but a decrease of 180 million bushels from the 2019 total.

The Renewable Fuels Association says last year’s blend rate was a record 10.34% of every gallon of gasoline sold, with annual production of 15 billion gallons, the largest volume for any year since 2010, and domestic consumption seeing a 10% jump.

Corn for ethanol use during January was 474.46 million bushels, 1% less than December 2021, but 14% more than January 2021.

Production of distillers dried grains with solubles in 2021 was 22,177,118 tons, a 10% rise on the year, with January production at 1,929,115 tons, 7% less than the previous month, but 10% more than last year.

The USDA’s next corn for ethanol use estimate is out March 9th.
