Acreage a moving target as USDA prepares Prospective Planting Report

USDA’s Prospective Planting report is less than a month away.

Eastern Iowa corn and soybean farmer Robb Ewoldt tells Brownfield he’s sticking with his usual rotation despite high input costs, especially for corn.

“With these current prices it’s hard to want to change anything now (because) it’s setting up to be pretty profitable when I can get a cash bid out of the field for my corn at about $5.75 (or) $5.80, and beans are up there too. So I think we’re in pretty good shape.”

Ewoldt farms near Davenport and currently serves as president of the Iowa Soybean Association.

University of Minnesota Extension crops educator Dave Nicolai says most farmers he’s spoken to want to stay with their long-term rotation.

“I don’t expect major shifts, at least right now. And I think a lot of the numbers and economists are (saying) that’s the case.”

USDA is surveying farmers about planting intentions and the results will be released March 31st
