Avian Influenza detected in another commercial turkey flock in Indiana
Avian influenza has been detected in another commercial turkey flock in southern Indiana.
The Indiana State Board of Animal Health says testing in Dubois County identified H5 avian influenza virus. Samples are being verified at USDA’s National Veterinary Services Laboratory in Iowa. BOAH says pending test results should indicate if the virus is the same as the index farm diagnosed on Feb. 9 and if it’s highly pathogenic.
This is the fifth farm diagnosed with avian influenza in Indiana. Depopulation efforts are underway on the premises, which houses nearly 36,000 birds. There have been three premises identified in Dubois County and two in Greene County. To date nearly 155,000 commercial turkeys have been depopulated.
The farm is 2.5 miles from the first site that detected avian influenza in the county. All commercial poultry within the new control area will be quarantined and tested regularly until the control area is lifted.
BOAH continues to reach out to known hobby and backyard poultry owners in the control areas to schedule testing of birds to ensure the virus is not present. More than 30 hobby flocks have been sampled and laboratory testing determined them as negative.
Last week the USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service confirmed Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza in two non-commercial backyard flocks, one in Maine and another in New York.
