Senate passes bill to avert shutdown, includes funding for LMR

The Senate voted Thursday to pass a stopgap bill to avert a government shutdown ahead of the Friday deadline.  The House of Representatives had previously approved the continuing resolution to extend funding through March 11.

The continuing resolution includes temporary funding for Livestock Mandatory Reporting, which requires meatpackers to report purchases and sales of livestock and livestock products to the USDA.

Kenny Burdine, an ag economist with the University of Kentucky says LMR is crucial to price transparency in the cattle markets.  “All these discussions that we’re having about cattle pricing would be almost impossible to have without the existence of good, independent market data,” he says.  “And to me, that starts with LMR.”

Since the CR has been passed by both the House and the Senate heads to the President’s desk for signature.
