Muscatine County Sheriff’s Office warns of jury duty scam

The Muscatine County Sheriff’s Office says the jury duty scam has appeared recently.

The departments said Thursday several people receiving phone calls with a subject stating the person called missed federal jury duty and identify themselves as “Officer McCleary”. They also state to call “Jeff Mullen” if there is a problem at a phone number provided as well as a link to remedy the missed jury duty.

“Please be advised that while the names provided are employees of our office, these phone calls are not originating from our employees or our agency,” the Sheriff’s Office stated in a Facebook post.

Those selected for jury duty may receive some mail, a phone call or even a visit by a deputy if you do not show up to court as instructed. Scammers are also cloning legitimate phone numbers, authorities say, making it easier to believe.

Law enforcement say they will never call and demand money, and that it is nearly impossible to reclaim money lost to scammers who are usually from overseas.

Anyone receiving a scam call can report it to the sheriff’s office at (563) 262-4190.
