Noem signs two grain bills

Governor Noem has signed two grain-related bills into law this week.

One increases penalties for action related to grain transactions at warehouses operating without a license. The other bans a grain broker from engaging in certain transactions or activities.

South Dakota Farm Bureau President Scott VanderWal says they supported the bills.

“We’ve had an instance or two in South Dakota where people were buying grain and then they got into some hedging. (They) got in a hole and tried to hedge their way out of it and kept on going deeper and deeper and a lot of farmers lost a lot of money.”

He says it will help farmers that are selling grain get paid for that grain.
