Wisconsin’s Legislature releases ag funding

Wisconsin’s legislative Joint Finance Committee has officially released budget funds to boost agricultural research and increase international farm exports.

The University of Wisconsin will receive $2 million over the next two years to fund eleven new UW Extension positions.  Three of the new positions are research-based and will operate from the Madison campus.  Eight new extension agents will be based at the county level to work directly with farmers.

State leaders also gave the green light to $558,400 that will help the state’s ag department support a new agricultural export initiative this year.  Ag officials can also seek the same amount of funding in 2023.  The overall goal is to increase Wisconsin dairy, meat, and other ag exports by 25% in five years.

The action is being applauded by dairy groups including Edge Dairy Farmers Cooperative and the Wisconsin Cheese Makers Association.
