Local fertilizer shortages a concern heading into spring

There are concerns about localized fertilizer shortages once spring fieldwork picks up.

University of Minnesota Extension educator Brad Carlson tells Brownfield fertilizer is being produced on a broad scale.

“So there’s not so much of an availability issue in the big picture sense. Now locally, that may be a problem because of record-high prices your local dealer is not likely to want to acquire extra fertilizer and then be faced with falling prices later on.”

He encourages farmers to plan for local availability issues.

“Have a strategy, know exactly what you’re going to do. And then make sure you’ve got that nitrogen booked and ordered.”

Carlson says lowering rates is one of the simplest ways to help offset record-high fertilizer prices.
