Illinois residents watching the Super Bowl this year will get a glimpse at how corn is being used as a solution to global climate challenges.

Illinois Corn Marketing Board member Roger Sy tells Brownfield they will air a commercial during the game about the use of corn in bioplastics.

“It has to so with the bioplastic containers like you use to carry out your food from restaurants. It shows how corn is making those more biodegradable to break down easier and quicker in landfills and make things a lot better there.”

He says they are also hosting a “take out takeover” to interact with consumers in the Chicago area.

“We will be supplying corn based plastic containers to carry the food out of the restaurants and consumers can actually experience fist hand how these products can be a solution for the waste plastics normally create.”

As a farmer, Sy says he sees consumer education as an important investment of checkoff dollars.

“I think the biggest thing is to build up the trust and let them know that what we are doing is not harmful for us or them. We feel our checkoff dollars are best spent on these types of projects that help the consumer feel more at ease.”

The 30-second ad will air on 5 regional stations (KSDK- St. Louis, KWQC -Quad Cities, WAND – Springfield, WEEK -Peoria, WREX – Rockford) and the Chicago area on February 13th.
