Farmer considering alternative herbicide plans this spring

Supply shortages of key herbicide ingredients like glyphosate and glufosinate have an Illinois farmer formulating alternative herbicide plans for this spring.

Mark Wilson grows corn and soybeans in Toulon, IL and tells Brownfield he may just have to settle for what is available.

“It is not going to be as easy as just using the same thing as last year or what has worked best in the past. If that isn’t available, then we will have to go to plan B.”

Aside from that, he says from an input standpoint they are in a good spot after locking in fuel and applying nitrogen in the fall and having purchased all their seed. “Overall, I think we are in pretty good shape getting ready for this upcoming year.”

Wilson serves as chairman of the Illinois Corn Marketing Board.
