USDA gives flexibility for school meals

The USDA is issuing transitional school nutrition standards through 2024 to help navigate pandemic challenges.

The final rule allows schools and childcare providers to serve flavored one percent milk and requires at least 80 percent of grains to be whole grains.  Sodium limits will need to decrease by 10 percent by next year.

The department also plans to establish long-term nutrition standards for the 2024-2025 school year.

Dairy groups are welcoming the announcement saying the rule clears up confusion and provides more options for students.
