USDA invests in Port of Oakland

The USDA is partnering with the Port of Oakland to better improve the movement of ag exports out of the U.S.

A new 25-acre “pop-up” site is being created to help ag commodities fill empty shipping containers on site.

During the AgriPulse Supply Chain Crisis webinar Monday, Vilsack said creative solutions are needed to improve the supply chain.

“There’s not any effort here to suggest that what we’re proposing with this pop-up is the only solution, but I will tell you it’s an important first step,” he says.

Officials say this announcement follows work done at the Port of Savannah with a similar pop-up to help improve the flow of goods.

Sixty percent of the cost will be covered by the USDA using Commodity Credit Corporation funds to make for quicker pick up of empty containers, access to available equipment, and fewer congested surcharges for trucks.

The International Dairy Foods Association, U.S. Dairy Export Council, National Milk Producers Federation, and U.S Meat Export Federation are among ag groups applauding the move.
