Announcement is a good first step to improve export logistics

The head of the US Meat Export Federation says the recently announced partnership between the USDA and the Port of Oakland is a good first step to improve export logistics.

Dan Halstrom tells Brownfield the announcement should help move empty shipping containers quicker.  “The Port of Oakland is a strategic port for US beef and pork exports,” he says. “Especially in our chilled cargo.  A lot of our chilled cargo goes out of that port.”

He says it should also help improve trade logistics with trading partners in Asia. “Oakland, in particular, is a very strategic port,” he says.  “It’s a shelf-life issue for chilled cargo.  Getting it into that port and it is the last port of call.  Boom your shipment is on its way to Asia.  It’s very, very strategic.”

Brownfield interviewed Halstrom ahead of the 2022 National Cattlemen’s Beef Association.
