55-year-old inmate at Muscatine Jail dies following “medical issue”

An inmate at the Muscatine County Jail died Saturday morning after suffering what the Muscatine County Sherriff’s Office described as a “medical issue”.

Muscatine County Correctional Officers were assisting the inmate in a cell block when he became unresponsive, according to a press release.

Officers started CPR and AED procedures. Shortly after these procedures were initiated, paramedics from the Muscatine Fire Department joined the officers.

“Despite the best efforts of the officers and paramedics, the inmate passed,” said Sheriff Quinn Reiss in a statement issued Tuesday.

The inmate was identified as Brian Keith Marston, 55, of Muscatine. He had been held at the Muscatine County Jail since October 15, awaiting transfer to the Iowa Medical Classification Center/Oakdale.

Riess said incident remains under investigation.

Those assisting with the investigation include the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, Muscatine County Sheriff’s Office, Muscatine County Medical Examiner’s Office, Muscatine County Attorney’s Office, and the Muscatine Fire/Ambulance.
