Muscatine Power and Water is warning about another attempt by scammers to prey on customers using fake emails and scam calls.
Bad actors attempt to gain your trust by claiming to be MachLink, or another service you use, wanting you to click on a link to gain access to your password.
Utilities are also often a target for phone scams, where the caller will claim to be from MPW, asking questions that seem fishy or demanding immediate payment.
If you’re ever unsure if an email or call you received is from us, you can ALWAYS call us to verify. Here are some best practices/red flags to help you determine if the call or email is spam and/or a scam:
- Double check for poor use of grammar and punctuation (like Micorsoft)
- If you’re not expecting it, question it; especially if it’s asking you to verify your credentials.
- If you’ve won something you didn’t sign up for, ignore it.
- Microsoft will never contact you directly about your computer’s performance or a virus on your computer.
If the caller/sender claims to be MPW or MachLink and it seems fishy, call us to verify at 263-2631, option 2.
