How the bioethanol industry is setting the stage for biotechnology

An ethanol industry leader says the future of bioethanol won’t be fuel, it will be technology.

Doug Berven is with POET – the world’s largest biofuel producer. “This is about biotechnology.  Creating a better set of future circumstances for the United States and the planet to come.”

He tells Brownfield the bioethanol industry has created “a system, a foundation to grow biotechnology in the future,” he says. “I think that’s really important to understand because we can make anything out of a bushel of corn that we can make out of a barrel of oil.  It’s just a matter of biotechnology and economics.”

He says farmers must be part of the conversation to help develop and use the technology. “The only way you do that is with more, better agriculture worldwide.”

Berven says biotechnology also helps reach climate goals faster.

POET held a groundbreaking in November at South Dakota State University for a biotechnology institute.
