Administration to work with congress for fair, transparent cattle markets

The Biden administration says it will work with Congress to make cattle markets fairer and more transparent.

National Economic Council Deputy Director Bharat Ramamurti says there are promising pieces of legislation coming out of both the House and the Senate..

“Senator Grassley and Senator Tester and others in the Senate have a bill and Representative Axne and Representative Feenstra Axne in the House have a bill that would bring more transparency by requiring more sales on the spot market,” he says.

He tells Brownfield “we are hoping to work with them and with their relevant committee chairs in Congress to get something to the president’s desk that will bring more transparency to these markets and ultimately empower ranchers to get more for the animal they raise.”

This move is part of the Action Plan for a Fairer, More Competitive, and More Resilient Meat and Poultry Supply Chain. The administration says it looks forward to working with Congress to ensure farmers and rancher have fair access to processing capacity.
