GOA report calls for better USDA transparency

The nonpartisan U.S. Government Accountability Office has released its assessment of the Market Facilitation Program used by USDA to offset trade damages to producers.

The GOA is recommending the USDA revise its internal review process of future economic analyses to improve methodology transparency and use more representative baselines.

The GOA previously reviewed the 2019 program last year which found payments were disproportionally distributed among commodities and regions of the U.S.

MFP paid $23 billion dollars to ag producers in 2018 and 2019.

Senate Ag Committee Chair Debbie Stabenow of Michigan, who called for the investigation, says the report confirms trade payments were distributed unfairly and there were deep regional inequities.
