Minnesota Beef Council CEO calls demand a bright spot during challenging year

The CEO of the Minnesota Beef Council says there were plenty of challenges in 2021.

But Kelly Schmidt tells Brownfield there were also many positives, beginning with demand.

“Both here domestically and globally. And we have great farmers and ranchers here in Minnesota that make a great wholesome (and) good product in beef. And that’s been one of the great bright spots is the demand has been really high for our product, so that’s always good to see.”

Beef exports are expected to top $10 billion in value this year, shattering the previous record.

He says the council leverages the great work of farmers and ranchers to reach more consumers.

“And we do that seasonally. We love doing that during the grilling season, (and) we take advantage now of the holidays (by) making beef a part of your meal choices week to week, your holiday get togethers, making sure beef is there at the forefront. So that is certainly a bright spot as we look back through all the challenges we had, people are still really liking our product.”

Brownfield interviewed Schmidt during the Minnesota Cattle Industry Convention earlier this month.
