Minnesota Pork CEO calls for patience as USDA rolls out Spot Market Hog Pandemic Program

Pork producers are encouraged to be patient as USDA rolls out more pandemic aid.

Minnesota Pork CEO David Preisler tells Brownfield Farm Service Agency offices are waiting for more information about the Spot Market Hog Pandemic Program.

“And there are still some determinations from a standpoint of what will qualify and what will not qualify that are being made at both the state and federal level.”

He says pigs marketed directly to a packer through a negotiated formula qualify for assistance, but feeder pigs and sows do not.

“And we also know that the pigs would’ve had to been marketed between April 18th and September 1st of 2020. So we do have some details, but we’re still waiting on some interpretation on pigs that may have gone to sales barns, or may have been kind of given away, or private treaty sales.”

Preisler says the association is pushing to include those pigs as well.

Farmers will have until February 25th to apply for the Spot Market Hog Pandemic Program.
