USDA puts 1.5 billion into school nutrition aid
The USDA making 1.5 billion in Commodity Credit Corporation funding available to states and school districts to help school meal programs affected by the challenges of supply chain disruptions.
Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack says, “It’s just basically an opportunity for us to provide resources to states to help defray the cost that school districts are now incurring by having to go to alternative suppliers and also providing opportunities as well to purchase product locally.”
One billion will go to schools to purchase food for meal programs. Three hundred million will help states purchase food for school distribution. Another 200-million will be used for cooperative agreements so schools can purchase local foods with a focus on historically underserved producers. Vilsack tells Brownfield, “This should help, I think, benefit local producers and hopefully also at the same time provide assistance to local school districts to get through a situation where right now, they just can’t get everything they need to feed the youngsters.”
The assistance levels vary by state.
