James Patrick O’Toole

James Patrick O’Toole, 79, of Muscatine, passed away on Thursday, November 25, 2021, at University of Iowa and Clinics.

Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 2, 2021, at St. Mathias Church. The Reverend Chris Weber will officiate. Visitation will be from 9 until 10:00 a.m., with a rosary at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 2, 2021, at the Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home. Burial will be in St. Malachy’s Cemetery. James was born on April 10, 1942, on a Farm in Letts, the son of Emmet J. and Dorothea M. Reichert O’Toole Sr. He married Jane Ann Olson on March 21, 1970, at St. Mathias Church. She preceded him in death on November 13, 2020.

James was a farmer for the family farm. He graduated from Hayes High School. James was a member of Ss. Mary Mathias Church and active with the Elks. He was involved in the Muscatine Soil Conservation and the Trustee for 76th Township. James was in the Army Reserves as an engineering battalion and bragged about his pie baking and fried chicken skills. He was an Avid basketball player and baseball player.

He enjoyed his cattle and cigars. James showed cattle for his entire life, naming his cattle Zeke or Maggie. He has a witty sense of humor, always teasing the nieces and nephews. He enjoyed spending time with his family.

James is survived by his son, Jonathan ‘Jon’ O’Toole of Letts; daughter, Sarah (Tim)Duggan of Cedar Rapids; Granddaughter, Abigail ‘Abby’ Murdock of the National Guard at DLIFLC in Monterey, CA; step-grandson, Devon Duggan and wife Phoebe of the US Army at Ft. Stewart, Georgia; sister, Delphine Smith of Villisca; and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife; brothers, Emmet ‘Sonny’ J. O’Toole Jr., and Mike O’Toole; and Sisters, Dorothy M. McKinney, and Patricia Butler.
