Major challenges in dairy have changed

The National Milk Producers Federation says the pandemic has changed what facets are causing uncertainty.

President and CEO Jim Mulhern address dairy leaders and farmers during this past week’s annual meeting.

“It now includes things like whether restaurants and major service outlets are going to remain open and need our products,” he says.  “Or whether a ship will carry our exports out of a port to an overseas destination.”

Mulhern says the greatest lesson from the pandemic can be found in 2020’s consumption trends.

“People want our product,” he says.

In a year where schools and restaurants closed their doors, Mulhern says dairy product consumption increased to the highest levels since 1960.  Dairy exports have also grown to record levels.

Mulhern also spoke on dairy policy achievements, the need for milk pricing reform, and other issues facing the industry.
