Nitrogen fertilizer triples in price
The cost of nitrogen fertilizer has tripled in the last year.
Kyle Walker is a farm manager based in central Iowa for Peoples Company.
“I know anhydrous was over $1,200 a ton the other day (and) last year at this time it was $400 to $500 a ton. So just a completely different ballgame right now.”
He tells Brownfield corn futures above $5 allows some room for higher per-acre costs.
“But landowners need to understand it’s not a direct correlation with commodity prices as far as what they can probably expect to get for rents, just because these high input prices are really (impacting) farmers.”
Walker, who was recently named Syngenta’s Professional Farm Manager of the Year, says despite the higher input costs he’s still telling his landlords to stick with their regular crop rotations.
