National Pork Board member applauding U.S. ASF prevention

A National Pork Board member is applauding the U.S’ ability of keeping African Swine Fever out of the country.

Missouri pig farmer Scott Phillips said custom and border protection has been successful so far in keeping contaminated pork products out of the U.S., helping prevent the entry of African Swine Fever. And he tells Brownfield more progress is being made.

“We’re developing tests for monitoring, we’ve been successful so far in keeping it out of the United States,” Phillips said. “Over 50 percent of the world sow herd is ASF positive, but we don’t have it.”

He said COVID-19 related travel restrictions have also been beneficial in preventing ASF spread.

“But we can’t rely on that forever, so we have to rely on our custom and border protection, we have to rely [that] any ingredients we source will have the proper downtime so that ASF will eventually die,” Phillips said.

Brownfield interviewed Phillips during Missouri Pork’s swine health institute Wednesday.
