Undersecretary Moffitt discusses role overseeing AMS and APHIS

It’s been a little over two months since Jenny Lester Moffitt was confirmed as USDA undersecretary of marketing and regulatory programs.

Moffitt oversees the Agricultural Marketing Service.

“That is such an important program really bolstering and building new markets and strengthening existing markets across the United States and American agriculture,” she says.

She says AMS aims to “build out more, better, and fairer markets throughout the supply chain.”

“The pandemic exposed so many different things and we saw the disruption in the supply chain and the opportunity to bolster that and build new and increased processing capacity; the ability for farmers and ranchers to have more places to bring products to market; and the ability for consumers to have access to more American grown food as well.”

Moffitt, who previously served as undersecretary of the California Department of Food and Agriculture, also oversees the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service.

“With APHIS, it’s things like African Swine Fever; really key issues that affect agriculture and swine industry and trade here in the United States,” she says. “And continuing our work in animal and plant health throughout the country and in partnership with all of our trade partners as well.”

Brownfield interviewed Moffitt during the 94th National FFA Convention and Expo.
