Minnesota farmer says late rains came just in time for soybeans

A west-central Minnesota farmer credits late season rains for his exceptional soybean crop.

DJ VanKlompenburg of Montevideo says moisture was very limited until the end of August.

“As with everything there was definitely quite a bit of variability, but over all our acres it was the best farm average we’ve ever had for soybeans. So I don’t have too much to complain about with that kind of result.”

But he tells Brownfield the rain came too late for some of his corn.

“We had some yields on the west side (of us) that weren’t too much to brag about, and then as we worked east it got much better. I had one field that was my personal best for yield, so very variable. And I think that was just a testament to the spotty rains we had this year.”

VanKlompenburg, who serves on the Minnesota Corn Growers Association Board of Directors, finished harvest earlier this week.
