Producers made less, paid more in September

The USDA says producers made less and paid more in September than in August.

The index of prices received was down 0.7% on the month, with declines in corn, soybeans, hogs, and strawberries canceling out gains in wheat, milk, lettuce, and broccoli.

The index of prices paid ticked 0.3% higher on increases for feeder pigs, LP gas, other machinery, and other services against decreases in feeder cattle, feed grains, hay and forages, and concentrates.

Year to year, the September 2021 index of prices received was 22% higher than in September 2020 and the index of prices paid was up 7.5%.
