Rising input costs making tough decisions for farmers
Corn and soybean growers have some tough decisions coming up when deciding how to best fertilizer their crops as prices rise.
Western Missouri farmers father and daughter Mendell and Kayla Elson are deciding the best fertilizer mix for next growing season.
Kayla Elson tells Brownfield normally the decision is based on the best yield potential in a particular field for their corn and soybeans…
“But it’s really going to determine if we think we’re going to be able to push our yield to be able to cover the cost of what we put out, honestly,” she said.
Mendell said as input prices rise, so does risk.
“If you don’t get the production to meet expenses, your total expenses are just a lot higher now so there’s a lot more risk involved,” he said.
Elson said he’s worried that rising costs could narrow margins to the tightest they’ve been in the last several years.
