25% of Ohio corn, 54% of soybeans harvested

The USDA says late rains slowed harvest in Ohio last week.

Twenty-five percent of the state’s corn crop is harvested, slightly behind the five-year average. Seventy-four percent of the crop is rated good to excellent.

Fifty-four percent of Ohio soybeans are harvested, a little behind the five-year average. Sixty-eight percent of the crop is rated good to excellent.

Northwestern Ohio farmer Todd Hesterman says harvest conditions have been challenging.

“We have a lot of soybeans to go yet,” he says. “I don’t know if we’re quite 50 percent complete on soybeans yet. We’ve really only had 4 or 5 excellent days to harvest soybean and this past weekend we got more than two inches of rain in a two-day period.”

But, he says for the crops that have been harvested are “right on our average and I think we’ll continue that if not just above average.”

Hesterman grows corn and soybeans in Napoleon, Ohio.
