2021 a challenging year for Minnesota dairies

A farm business management instructor says it’s been a challenging year for Minnesota dairies.

Wayne Schoper is with South Central College in Mankato and suggests many farms have been hanging in there.

“On the plus side, we got a lot of good quality forages put up this year. There were concerns about hay supplies, alfalfa, some of the good forages, but I think overall we should be okay.”

He tells Brownfield while feed supplies are in pretty good shape, margins are extremely tight.

“Right now the cost of production is probably around that $17.00cwt or something like that. Milk prices with premiums are probably in that range.”

Schoper is encouraged by an improving milk price outlook, and he says the dairy safety net has helped offset lower prices so far this year.

Schoper made these comments during Brownfield affiliate KNUJs recent Farm Forum.
