Agronomist fears continued corn rootworm pressure

A Nebraska based agronomist says he’s seeing increasing corn rootworm pressure this fall.

Dekalb Asgrow’s Kevin Keller tells Brownfield if there aren’t any ‘massive’ weather events this winter to thin the population, it could mean large numbers of the pest next growing season.

“That’s where some of our corn rootworm technologies come into play,” Keller said. “Making the right decisions of either implementing a rotation or utilizing those technologies such as Smart Stax corn hybrid could be a game changer for next year.”

He said farmers should treat for corn rootworm if…

“If you’re seeing more than a beetle per plant, you could be at [the] economical threshold for next year,” he said.

Keller recommends scouting ahead of next season to best manage the pest.
