First generation farmer says corn exceeds expectation despite green snap

A first-generation Nebraska farmer says corn yields are beating expectations despite some challenges during the growing season.

Michael Bergen of Henderson is harvesting his fifteenth crop and tells Brownfield there’s anywhere from 10 to 70 percent green snap in fields from a July storm. “Getting 90 to 100 mile-per-hour winds right before tassel time and pollinating really slowed down the growth a little bit,” Bergen says. “We’re maybe a little bit behind where we’d like to be. This corn crop had a lot of sun and a lot of heat units this summer and the crop progressed really nicely.”

He says yields are about 250 bushels-per-ace, but expects that to vary from field to field. “We’re going to have some fields that are going to be really difficult with heavy breakage but I think the overall yields that are going to be pretty good,” he says. “We’re going to have some exceptional yields and some that will be disappointing but we’ll be taken care of on the insurance end.”

Bergen says he finished soybeans Tuesday night and yields were above average.
